A Brief history of the Bahamas

on the islands are luxury properties although it took the a long timeto get as far as this. Columbus discovered the area of the Bahamas when the Arawark Indians were on the islands who are supposed to have been the first settlers on the islands and after his first encounter with the new world Lucayan tribe he exchanged gifts with them. In 1647 when the English Civil War was on there was a group of Puritan religious refugees from Bermuda and they were known as the Eleutheran Adventurers who settled there making this the first permanent European settlement in the Bahamas and they gave Eleuthera its name, which means freedom During the American war of independence the islands fell under the rule of Spanish forces and General Galvez in 1782. After the American independence the land was handed back to the British and after this the population began to triple within a few years.
