La Lonja is the Silk Exchange but is also called the Llotja del Canem or Hemp Exchange, thanks to the in depth trade in hemp fabric and rope during the past. The building was made in the first part of the 17th century. Close to the Square Mayor stands the Casa dels Miquels : a fifteenth century nobleman's home with big sculptured voussoirs above the primary entrance. Next to this stands the children's orphanage Casa dels Orfens set up in the 19th century by Bishop Jos Climent.
