It may be an ancient city but the accommodation in Alicante is modern

If you are interested in history, base your accommodation in Alicante. This area has been inhabited over 7,000 years creating a lot of history to explore, at least for the archaeologists. Leap forward some five thousand years to when the Greek and Phoenician traders appeared on the scene. They begin setting up small trading ports on the Iberian Peninsula and in doing so they began to teach locals the alphabet, how to forge iron and make pottery with the aid of a wheel. Alicante had a turbulent history: there were invasions leading to battles which were fought for control of the Iberian Peninsula, not to leave out the continuous raids to capture slaves by the Barbary Pirates. It wasn't until the 20th century that Alicante truly began to enjoy the benefits of being part of Spain.
