A Little Castle History from your Spain Holiday Villa

Take HOLIDAY VILLAS IN SPAIN which is littered with thousands of castles. Most were built during the reconquest as Spanish kings or lords would build a new castle to help define a new border. By the end of the reconquest, which took 700 years, there were 10,000 registered castles but now there are only 2,500. Some of these castles were built on ancient ruins; some combine Muslim design with Christian architecture and others are just of Gothic construction built along new border lines. What has been left after all those years of construction make for some fantastic holiday discoveries: small white washed villages with castles overlooking them giving fantastic views of anything from the mountains to the Mediterranean Sea.
