Cathedral of Almeria, Spain

The Cathedral of Almeria in Spain was originally constructed as a fortress against marauding pirates and was constructed during the Renaissance period in the mid-16th Century. Its Gothic construction includes a polygonal apse as well as a Baroque Tower. The Cathedral has many chapels with beautifully constructed altars including one main altar which is of Baroque design. The Cathedral is decorated with fine sculptures and beautiful paintings. Guided tours are available for a fee from Monday to Friday and tours include the Renaissance cloister which was once a parade ground for the fortress. The fortress is near many other historical and religious sites like Notably, Church of San Juan and the Alcazaba Castle and museum. Much of the design was by Juan de Orea and Bishop Villalan the founder of the fortress is entombed in the chapel behind the main altar.
