LA DAMA DE ELCHE- AN IBERIAN SCULPTURE

In 1897 the La Dama de Elche was discovered on a private estate that is 2km south of Elche, L'Alcudia; an archeological site. This polychrome bust is considered to be the prime masterpiece of Iberian sculpture and is made of limestone and measures about fifty six centimeters. Some blue, white and red paint remains on the lips of La Dama de Elche. The braided hair of the statue is hidden by two giant buns. The shoulders are covered by a shawl and on the chest are 3 beautiful necklaces. The statue has an enigmatic and serene gaze. The woman wears a very complex headdress.
