Santuario Virgen de la Balma

The Santuario Virgen de la Balma isn't your average historical cathedral site. This is an ancient pilgrimage centre that looks to be carved out of the beautiful hillside and is located in a secluded area about three kilometers from the village. But those who traveled here when it was a pilgrimage destination probably didn't revel in its beauty or appreciate its gorgeous location. In the eighteenth and early twentieth century the cult of St. Mary Magdalene used the property as a site for mass exorcisms to cure women who were deemed to be possessed by the devil. Women made the grueling pilgrimage over mountains and across rivers in order to be cured of their demons usually by force. Most of these women had epilepsy and other disorders that induced seizures. Aside from the whole exorcism thing the site is a historically rich destination that houses an interesting Virgin Mary cave shrine, church and a small inn. Check out Castellon holiday rental apartments to enable you to be close to this fantastic attraction.
